Like many other institutions built upon core principles of enlightenment, education and schooling, too, are faced with a deluge of novel and serious challenges. Rapid and profound changes in information technologies accompanied by unrelenting and exponential proliferation of sources as well as quantity of information and knowledge has brought legitimacy (at least the priviledged status) of schools into critical questioning, let alone their technical core (methods of delivery of education, their structuring and operation etc.). Questions abound; What skills should we teach/develop to better equip individuals with tools they will be needing to survive in the 21st century? How can we, as educators, deal with such formidable challenges so as to be able to keep guiding individuals (and societies ultimately) in their journey of becoming better? These questions are hard to answer, there are no quick fixes. Yet, education and schooling remain as one of the most important means through which societies can shape the future. MUISCE 2019 will hopefully give participants from around the world an opportunity to discuss this very role/issue and the responsibilities it brings upon individuals, institutions and societies.
