Emeritus Professor Dr. Bill Williamson

Emeritus Professor Bill Williamson BSc(Soc), MA, PhD,  began his academic career as a lecturer in sociology and retired from university life as a Professor  of Continuing Education in Durham University. His academic work and publications crossed several boundaries: the sociology of education, comparative education, social and contemporary history and the theory and practice of lifelong learning. His most recent work has focused on educational aspects of the Israel-Palestine conflict. The threads that draw these themes together have three main strands: the importance of history, the seamless interdependence of the personal and the political and the need to understand how lifeworlds and learning inter-connect. In retirement, his main academic interest is to explore the role of imagination in human experience and its role now in building a just, democratic and sustainable future for us all. His belief is that to build a better world, we first have to imagine it. The social sciences and humanities have a critically important role in this. but they, too have to be re-imagined.

He is married with two children and six grandchildren who keep him and his wife both busy and amused.
