Artificial Intelligence Continues to Serve Humanity Across Different Fields
A publicly accessible AI technology has enhanced a 124-year-old low-resolution video to 4K at 60 frames per second. This process, known as upscaling, refers to increasing the resolution of a video or image.
AI Transforms a 124-Year-Old Video into 4K
This remarkable work was carried out by YouTuber Denis Shiryaev. He upscaled the famous 50-second video recorded in 1896, L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat (Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station), into high resolution using modern artificial intelligence tools.
Shiryaev stated that he used Google's DAIN and Topaz Labs' Gigapixel AI to enhance the video.
The result isn’t perfect — but considering it’s a piece of footage shot with 19th-century technology and impossible to re-record, it’s safe to say the outcome is impressive. This AI technology works by predicting and generating the frames that never existed in the original, effectively "filling in the gaps."
As you can see in the videos below, while the result is not flawless, it is certainly watchable and a substantial improvement.
