Dr. Mert Tolon, Coordinator of the Maltepe University Sustainability Office and a member of the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D), participated in the 11th Istanbul Carbon Summit, held on May 4–5, 2026, at the Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center of Istanbul Technical University, representing the Maltepe University Sustainability Office.
Organized by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D), the summit brought together representatives from government institutions, academia, industry, financial organizations, and international stakeholders to discuss current developments in carbon management, climate change mitigation, sustainable production, energy transition, and green finance.
Throughout the summit, participants explored the role of carbon management in sustainable production, the interaction between the European Green Deal and the Türkiye Green Deal Action Plan, developments related to the Emissions Trading System (ETS), the future of carbon markets, climate finance, green banking practices, and pathways toward a climate-resilient industrial transformation. The strategic importance of the energy and waste sectors in achieving Türkiye’s climate goals, as well as best practices in corporate carbon management, were also highlighted.
The opening session featured keynote addresses by Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu, President of SÜT-D and Faculty Member at Istanbul Technical University; Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, Rector of Istanbul Technical University; and Fatih Turan, Director General of Environmental Management at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. The speakers shared valuable insights on sustainable development, carbon management, and climate policies.
Over the course of the two-day summit, expert panels and presentations addressed a wide range of topics, including climate technologies and innovative financing mechanisms, carbon management in the textile sector, Türkiye’s decarbonization roadmap, industrial carbon management, and the transition toward low-carbon energy systems. Sessions featured contributions from representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), TSKB, SOCAR Türkiye, LC Waikiki, Eti Bakır, and numerous industry leaders, providing participants with comprehensive insights into current policies, strategies, and practical applications.
The summit demonstrated that carbon management is not only an environmental necessity but also a strategic instrument for competitiveness, sustainable development, and institutional transformation. Furthermore, it fostered knowledge exchange and collaboration opportunities among stakeholders from diverse sectors.
