1. Prep Class for Undergraduate Programs in English

About the program

The English Prep Class (PUPE) of the School of Foreign Languages is compulsory for students enrolled in faculties and departments where the medium of instruction is English, and optional for students enrolled in faculties where the medium of instruction is Turkish.

Students begin the preparatory program at either the Elementary or Pre-Intermediate entry level. Their starting level is determined by the Placement Test administered at the beginning of the academic year. Starting from the level at which they are placed, students progressively develop their language proficiency throughout the program, with the aim of reaching B2 level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) by the end of the program.

Since its establishment, the School of Foreign Languages has regularly reviewed and updated its curriculum and course schedule in line with students’ needs to ensure that they acquire the English language proficiency required to successfully pursue their undergraduate studies.

The program is designed in consideration of the academic and communicative needs that students may encounter during their undergraduate studies and places emphasis on the integrated development of receptive and productive language skills. Accordingly, students at all levels are provided with opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through a variety of activities, supported by computer-assisted multimedia applications and online resources.

The regular duration of the English Preparatory Program is two semesters. Classes are conducted face-to-face. Students attend classes five days a week and receive a minimum of 26 hours of instruction per week, depending on the language requirements of the program in which they are enrolled. Students are required to attend at least 80% of their classes.

The objectives of the program are determined by the Testing and Materials Office in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), taking into account the academic and linguistic needs of students at each level.
