2. Associate - Undergraduate Programs in English
About the Program
The Undergraduate and Associate Degree Programs Unit of the School of Foreign Languages at Maltepe University provides language education designed to equip students enrolled in Turkish- and English-medium undergraduate and associate degree programs with the foreign language skills required in their academic and professional lives. Course content is structured at varying levels and with differing scopes, taking into consideration the academic and professional requirements of each department and programme.
In Turkish-medium departments and programs, compulsory General English courses are offered to help students develop fundamental foreign language skills. The duration, weekly contact hours, and target proficiency levels of these courses vary according to the specific characteristics of each programme. General English courses aim to improve students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as their grammatical and lexical competence. In certain departments and programmes, following their General English education, students also take Professional English courses that focus on field-specific terminology and academic and professional texts.
Students who already possess the level of foreign language proficiency required by their programme may be exempted from compulsory General English courses by taking the Exemption Examinations administered by the School of Foreign Languages at the beginning of each semester. Exemption procedures are conducted in accordance with the relevant university regulations, with due consideration given to students’ current foreign language proficiency and prior language education.
In English-medium departments and programs, the aim is to enable students to further develop, at an academic level, the language skills acquired during their preparatory education throughout their undergraduate studies. Accordingly, following the preparatory program, students take courses designed to enhance their academic reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills. These courses support students in understanding a range of academic sources, producing academic texts, and participating effectively in the educational processes of their departments in English.
