Turkish Proficiency Exam (DBS)

To place students in classes appropriate to their level in the Preparatory Class, the Preparatory Class requires the Preparatory Class (DBS) exam. Therefore, students who enroll in the university for the first time and will study in the Turkish Preparatory Class will be admitted to the DBS exam on the dates announced in the academic calendar. Students who do not take the exam will be placed in the lowest level available in the Turkish Preparatory Class.

To be exempt from the Preparatory Class, students must first achieve a score equivalent to a minimum B1+ level on the DBS exam. Students who fail to meet these requirements will be placed in classes determined by the DBS results.

The Turkish Proficiency Exam (DBS) aims to measure four basic language skills. The fee for the Turkish Proficiency Exam is the equivalent of $100.

Required Documents for the Exam: A copy of your passport and a receipt showing payment of the exam fee.

The Exam Result Document can be collected on the second business day following the exam.

Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS)

The Language Proficiency Exam is designed to assess students' language proficiency levels to enable them to follow academic courses. It is a B1+ level exam. It can be administered four times throughout the academic year: once at the beginning of the academic year, once at the end of the fall and spring semesters, and once at the end of the summer module.

The exam consists of reading, listening, writing, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary sections, measuring all language skills. Students who achieve a score of at least B1+ on the Level Determination Exam (DBS) administered at the beginning of the academic year are eligible to advance to their current program. Students who score below 60 points are placed in a level-appropriate lottery and begin the Turkish Preparatory Class.

The Proficiency Exam, prepared by Maltepe TÖMER faculty members, consists of four main sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. The exam duration (excluding the Speaking section) is 2 hours.

Certificates are awarded to students who complete the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels of Turkish language courses. The validity of a document is determined not by the issuing institution, but by the receiving institution that will process it.

We also offer a Turkish proficiency exam for students who wish to assess their Turkish language skills.

Exam results are evaluated according to the European Language Portfolio. The levels are as follows:

A1 – A2 (Basic)

B1 – B2 (Intermediate)

C1 – C2 (Advanced)

While the satisfactory exam result depends on the institution to which the document is submitted, A1 and A2 levels are generally considered to be failing. The exam result is valid at all universities in Turkey.

Our proficiency exams are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 PM. Candidates must arrive at our center by 12:00 PM on the day they wish to take the exam, obtain the necessary bank documents from the relevant education advisor to pay the exam fee, and deposit them into the bank designated by the University. With the bank receipt, they must contact their education advisor again and register for the exam with their passport.

Exam result documents can be collected within five business days of the exam.

The exam start time is 2:00 PM. Candidates who are not present at this time will have their exam postponed until the next exam day.
