Aim and Scope

Throughout the day, we are exposed to digital images and sound; we live under the most intense bombardment of messages in history. This uninterrupted flow of stimuli, which promises to accelerate communication and strengthen the connection between individuals, others, and the world, has gradually turned into a shared atmosphere of noise that surrounds us all. The global village that Marshall McLuhan foresaw years ago has today given way to a virtual public sphere in which everyone is shouting at once. What is both striking and tragic is that, rather than rejecting noise, we are drawn toward it. Unable to detach ourselves from this state of constant stimulation; we continue to shape our daily lives through the urge to remain connected, becoming both the producers of noise and its willing consumers.

With this exhibition, the Department of Visual Communication Design at Maltepe University aims to make noise visible, through artistic production, as a collective experience of contemporary life. If you, too, find yourself wondering if you may be drifting toward nothingness in attempt to become everything, and if you have ever thought, “how deeply I miss myself,” we invite you not to search for silence within the noise, but to confront noise itself through your artworks.
