Courses at Maltepe University's Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center (MaltepeTÖMER) begin and end according to the annual academic calendar. Course start dates are announced regularly. Registration begins one month before the course start date.
At MaltepeTÖMER, Turkish language instruction is provided by expert instructors in classes of 15-20 students. Classes are designed for a modern learning environment. Classes can be arranged in a "U" desk system when necessary. This allows students to easily see each other and the instructors, facilitating communication.
The faculty members at Maltepe TÖMER are graduates of Turkish Language and Literature, philology, and language teaching departments. They have also pursued or are pursuing academic careers at Maltepe University and other universities.
Our courses are designed according to the language levels defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and we implement communicative and learner-focused instruction. Accordingly, our courses and certificates are structured as A1-A2 (Basic), B1-B2 (Intermediate), and C1 (Advanced). Our courses consist of five levels, starting at A1 and continuing through C1.
At Maltepe TÖMER, Turkish lessons aren't just for foreigners. We also organize excursions introducing students to Turkish culture (Bosphorus tours, museums, historical sites, etc.), film screenings, and music concerts. Our goal in this regard is to help students understand the culture of the language they are learning and the importance of intercultural communication. We also have a specialist instructor who specializes in teaching Turkish remotely. Courses for the Preparatory Exemption Exams can also be offered online upon request.
Turkish Language Teaching - Objectives
Turkish courses are determined according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Level Objectives
A1 An individual can meet their basic needs using very simple sentences common to everyone in daily life. They can introduce themselves or others. They can communicate effectively if the other person helps them and speaks clearly and slowly.
A2 An individual can communicate using simple sentences and terms related to their immediate environment and topics. They can exchange simple information about frequently encountered situations.
B1 They can understand the main idea of texts that use clear and concise language. They can also understand difficult texts related to their field of interest. They can construct simple but interconnected sentences. They can overcome problems that may arise while traveling. They can share information about their experiences.
B2 Can understand the main idea of complex texts. Knows the terminology relevant to his/her field and can conduct interviews using these terms. Can express himself/herself fluently and quickly. Can provide clear and detailed information on a topic. Can answer a current question and provide information with both positive and negative aspects. C1 Can understand long and complex texts and produce detailed summaries. Can express himself/herself fluently and quickly without searching for excessive vocabulary. Can use language effectively in social, professional, and educational settings. Can express himself/herself on complex topics in a clear, structured, and detailed manner.
European Language Portfolio
The European Language Portfolio is a tool for recording and reporting your informal intercultural experiences and the language experiences you acquire throughout your life—at school, in vocational training, and at work. This file will provide a clear record of your language learning qualifications and experiences, reflected in European standards, for use throughout your career.
The European Language Portfolio is your personal data, but it also allows employers and educators to immediately see your language proficiency through exemplary work.
The European Language Portfolio consists of three sections: the Language Passport, the Language History, and the Dossier. Each section provides instructions on how to use them.
The Language Passport contains general information about your proficiency in various languages over specific periods. It records formal qualifications and self-assessment, identifying key language and intercultural learning experiences and language competencies/skills. The Standard Passport (European Language Portfolio for those over 16), recommended by the Council of Europe, facilitates equivalence and free movement processes throughout Europe.
The Language History allows an individual to indicate what they can do in each language they know, including information about vocational training and workplace acquisition, as well as linguistic and cultural experiences gained within and outside formal education systems. It facilitates the assessment of an individual's learning process and development, and the planning of their educational path. It also encourages plurilingualism, meaning proficiency in multiple languages.
The file provides the necessary materials to document and explain your achievements and experiences, recorded in the Language History and Language Passport sections.
The Council of Europe is an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Strasbourg, France. Its primary purpose is to foster the unity of the continent and to safeguard the dignity of European citizens by upholding fundamental values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
One of its aims is to foster mutual understanding among people from different cultures by raising awareness of European cultural identity. In this context, the Council of Europe coordinates the promotion of the European Language Portfolio to promote and support equivalence in language learning and intercultural experiences at all levels.
The Council of Europe's main objectives in this regard are:
• To monitor learning processes,
• To provide the European Language Portfolio as a tool to assist language learners in recording their language learning stages and experiences, including intercultural contacts,
• To strengthen the development of language learning and experiences,
• To encourage the learning of multiple languages,
• To ensure interoperability between education and employment,
• To foster democratic citizenship in Europe,
• To demonstrate the value of linguistic diversity.
Language Passport
This document is a record of an individual's language skills, proficiency, and intercultural experiences.
Language skills are defined by the proficiency levels presented in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The scale (self-assessment form) is presented in the Language Passport. This scale, like the self-assessment form, is also part of the Language Passport.
The passport contains the following:
• Language skills profile
• Summary of language learning and intercultural experiences
• Record of certificates and diplomas
Language History
This section is a record of an individual's language learning history and helps them define their language learning goals and record their language proficiency and progress in a self-assessment form.
The File
This section displays and documents the experience and stages. This section contains examples of various personal works. The file owner's certificates and diplomas are also included in this section.
For ease of use, this portfolio has been prepared in four languages (Turkish, English, French, German).
Required Documents for Registration for Those Entering Turkey on a Tourist Visa
1- Passport
2- 6 passport-sized photographs.
*Those entering Turkey on a tourist visa must first obtain an ACCEPTANCE Certificate from Maltepe TÖMER to register for a Turkish course.
*The Acceptance Certificate is provided for a fee of $400. This fee will be deducted from the course fee at the time of final registration.
Those wishing to apply from outside Istanbul can email the student's passport copy and photograph to [email protected], transfer the acceptance fee to the specified account number, and obtain the Acceptance Certificate via email.
The visa approval process and processing time are entirely up to the consulate, and Maltepe TÖMER has no involvement in the process.
PAYMENT AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
• A placement test must be taken before registering for courses. The placement test is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 PM.
• The placement test results are valid for three months. Despite the placement test results, the instructor may change the student's course if deemed necessary, with the approval of the directorate.
Course fees: are charged in Turkish Lira or US Dollars. Registration fees for classes not offered due to reasons arising from Maltepe TÖMER, as well as fees for students who cannot obtain a visa, will be refunded.
• Registration Suspension: If a valid excuse is provided, class changes can be made within the first week of the registered course, if possible. Subsequent applications will not be accepted, and fees will not be refunded for the missed course period.
• Registration suspension is valid for a maximum of one year. If course fees are increased during this period, the student will be charged the difference. For registration suspensions arising from Maltepe TÖMER, the difference in the increased fee will not be charged. For registration suspensions of more than four months, a free Placement Exam will be administered for re-registration.
• For refunds due to force majeure, the following are required:
I. The original invoice,
II. A petition,
III. The student's identification document, and
IV. The IBAN.
• Courses at Maltepe TÖMER are offered 12 months a year, seven days a week, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, excluding official and religious holidays.
• Course cancellations due to reasons attributable to Maltepe TÖMER will be made up. Course start and end dates and course rates are determined each academic year and determined according to the Academic Calendar.
• Students may transfer their tuition fees to another student within the first week of a course term.
• For a class to be opened, the minimum number of students for each course must be reached.
• For group applications, special classes with specific intensity levels may be offered for one- or two-month periods. The Maltepe TÖMER administration has the authority to continue or close classes, change course hours, change classrooms, and change instructors.
• A final exam consisting of five skills is administered in the last four hours of each exam level. Successful students advance to the next level. Failing students must repeat the same level, paying the course fee. Passing all skills on the course exam requires achieving the following minimum scores:
