Vedat Günyol was born on 16 March 1911 in Istanbul. After completing his secondary education at St. Benoit High School in 1934, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University in 1938. He produced his first translations during his university years.
He began his doctoral studies in International Law in Paris, but had to interrupt them due to World War II; however, he returned ten years later and completed his doctorate. During his time in Paris, he became close friends with Halide Edip Adıvar and Adnan Adıvar, and produced several joint translations with Halide Edip. In 1941, he published a weekly children’s magazine titled Cemal Nadir Güler ve Arkadaş. He worked as a translator for the magazines Şirket-i Hayriye and Yücel.
He began his literary career with summaries of French novels and book reviews published in Yücel magazine (1938–1939). He later became a regular contributor to Yeni Ufuklar magazine, whose first issue appeared in February 1952.
He held several positions throughout his career: assistant in Public Law and French instructor at the Faculty of Law, Istanbul University (1939–40); French teacher at Vefa High School (1940) and Gedikpaşa Middle School; Director of Publications and member of the Translation Bureau at the Ministry of National Education in Ankara (1942–50); French teacher at Hasanoğlan Higher Village Institute, Ankara Gazi High School, and the Italian High School (1950); and legal advisor at Banko Di Roma (1955–60).
At Maltepe University’s Private Marmara Radio, Television and Journalism Anatolian Technical High School, Vedat Günyol taught courses on Human Rights and Democracy. In April 2002, Maltepe University awarded him an honorary doctorate.
The Vedat Günyol Library, opened on 2 May 1998 on the university’s Cevizli Campus with donations from Vedat Günyol, is housed within Marmara Educational Institutions’ Marmara College. His personal archive is also part of this collection.
Vedat Günyol passed away in Istanbul on 9 July 2004.
