The Sociology Department in the Graduate School of Social Sciences of Maltepe University has been offering a Ph.D. Program to the graduates with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in all disciplines and fields of social sciences promising a high level of theoretical and methodological preparation to conduct research in substantive areas of social life.

There are only three Ph.D. Programs in Sociology in Metropolitan Istanbul, the  Maltepe University Ph.D. Program in sociology being the third one. Together with the other two programs and as an alternative to them, the program has been training academicians and researchers needed in Istanbul, the other parts of Turkey, neighboring countries and the world. Those obtaining a Ph.D. degree from the program will be employed in sociology and other social science departments, many of which are being opened as the number of state and foundation universities increase in Turkey. In addition to the universities, the graduates of the program can be employed as researchers in public and private agencies, the number of which is also increasing.   

It is expected that the students complete the program in four years. For two years the students take different courses before completing their qualification exams. After thatthe students will choose a supervisor according to their special field and will be directed by them to research which will last two years.

Those candidates who are eligible for the doctoral program but did not graduate from sociology bachelor or Master’s programs will be included into a deficiency or a preparation program.

MISSION

To bring together those students who are committed to embark into a Ph.D. studies in sociology, to train them in such a way that they understand sociological theories and construct new theoretical frameworks  and  design new research methods and use them in conducting sociological research in different areas to make original contributions to sociological theory and methodology.

VISION

To conduct research with advanced theories, methods and techniques in areas in which social, political and economic interests are combining and conflicting with each other and to share the results and findings of research by publishing original articles in national and international peer reviewed journal and herewith to contribute to scientific debates through which social sciences proliferate.
